What is autism spectrum disorder?

Autism, also called autism spectrum disorder or ASD, is a form of neurodivergence in which the brain functions differently. Autism affects the ability to communicate and interact with other people. It’s common, ranging in severity from mild to severe. While there’s no cure for autism, therapy can improve social interactions and behavior patterns.

Which symptoms can autism cause?

People with autism may have the following symptoms:

  • Lack of eye contact
  • Repeating movements or sounds (stimming) to regulate emotions
  • Difficulty with social interactions
  • Repetitive and/or restrictive behaviors
  • Preferring being alone
  • Talking about a narrow range of topics
  • Having one-sided conversations
  • Having few or no friends
  • Speaking in a monotone or robotic voice
  • Difficulty understanding social cues
  • Not initiating social interactions
  • Trouble recognizing sarcasm
  • Avoiding foods with certain textures

People with autism may become upset by changes to their routine because they typically prefer things that are familiar. They might have highly focused interests in certain topics.

What are the risk factors for autism?

The cause isn’t known, but autism risk factors may include:

  • Family history of autism
  • Giving birth early
  • Being pregnant over age 35
  • Having gestational diabetes
  • Bleeding during pregnancy
  • Becoming pregnant within 12 months of having another baby
  • Taking certain medications while pregnant
  • Small fetal size

The risk of autism may also increase due to reduced oxygen to a baby during pregnancy or delivery.

How is autism diagnosed?

Autism is diagnosed during a psychiatric evaluation using DSM-5 criteria. I will discuss your or your child’s lifestyle, medical history, symptoms, thoughts, moods, emotions, behaviors, and social interactions to determine which treatments are the most appropriate.
