What is ADHD?

ADHD is a type of neurodevelopmental disorder that’s often diagnosed during childhood, but it typically continues into adulthood. ADHD is characterized by difficulty paying attention, impulsive behaviors, and trouble sitting still (hyperactivity). While most people struggle to focus from time to time, ADHD can cause problematic symptoms that interfere with quality of life.

What are the symptoms of ADHD?

People with ADHD may have the following symptoms:

  • Trouble staying focused
  • Difficulty following through with tasks
  • Poor multitasking skills
  • Forgetting things easily
  • Impulsive decisions or behaviors
  • Speaking out of turn
  • Difficulty in social situations
  • Missing details
  • Squirming or fidgeting in their seat
  • Being constantly on the go
  • Talking more than usual
  • Interrupting other people

ADHD symptoms range from mild to severe. Treatment can reduce symptoms and allow you (or your child) to flourish at work or school.

What are the risk factors for ADHD?

ADHD risk factors might include:

  • Family history of ADHD
  • Brain injuries
  • Poor nutrition
  • Premature birth
  • Using tobacco, alcohol, or drugs during pregnancy
  • Lead and other environmental toxins

However, the exact cause of ADHD isn’t entirely understood.

How is ADHD diagnosed?

A psychiatric evaluation can diagnose ADHD, autism, and similar conditions. Kristin discusses your or your child’s symptoms, medical history, lifestyle habits, emotions, thoughts, moods, abilities, and behaviors to learn which type of therapy is the most appropriate.

How is ADHD treated?

ADHD treatment may consist of medications, talk therapy, educational training for parents, and lifestyle modifications. Healthy habits, such as getting enough sleep, staying active, minimizing stress, creating a routine, making to-do lists, and eating nutritious food, are helpful.
